When I was a boy, there was that part of the Lord’s Prayer where you have to “forgive those who trespass against you.” So at the age of six or seven, there was this very cute girl I liked, named Amy. She lived up the street from us, and so I decided that she would be whom I would forgive - if she ever trespassed or walked on our property on her way to school. Even more troubling for me was that Amy and her parents were supporting the democratic candidate for president, while my parents were supporting the republican. Amy and I use to get in fights over this. So I forgave her for this too, although it wasn't technically "trespassing". Worse, Amy didn't even go to our church! So there was that too. Still, she was cute. It was at this point I began to learn that life was sometimes complex. |
