This is as much a philosophy and approach to life as it is an essential book I am recommending to all creatives, whether you are an active or repressed artist. Or simply someone wishing to expand your artistic vision.
Throughout my life I have tried, with different degrees of success, various things to get around the road blocks that I put in my way. Because face it, those are the hardest road blocks to get around. I’m often asked what was the hardest thing about a given project and my answer is always the same… “Dealing with me!”
Julia Cameron’s book The Artist’s Way is a godsend for unraveling and untying your creative self. It is so much more than a book, but rather a many week guided course for understanding how to open yourself up artistically and creatively.
Everyone I know who has actually used The Artist’s Way I have seen flourish creatively. That’s not to say that the simple suggestions and ideas are easy to do. Each week you will often be confronted with “stuff” from inside you that you don’t want to sort out.
But gently, slowly, and with kindness, the path she takes you on restores your creative self. I think the book was originally written to help writers suffering from writers block, but everything in the book is about helping anyone who is a creative, be it an actor, director, painter, sculptor, dancer, singer, composer, photographer, or simply human.
If I have a rating system… The Artist’s Way gets Ten Stars. BUT!! YOU GET OUT WHAT YOU PUT IN!!
So get this book today and discover your full creative self!
I’d love to hear your experiences using the book, or other ideas you have for unblocking stuck creativity… please share!
